Br. Martin Erspamer professes vows

Br. Martin Erspamer, OSB, professed his solemn vows as a Benedictine monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in a ceremony on August 15, 2008, in the Archabbey Church at St. Meinrad, IN.

He entered the novitiate at Saint Meinrad in 2005 and the following year received the name Br. Martin as part of his transfer process from the Society of Mary (Marianists) in St. Louis, MO. In professing solemn vows of obedience, fidelity to the monastic way of life and stability in the community at Saint Meinrad, he becomes a full and permanent member of the Benedictine community.

Br. Martin, 55, was born July 28, 1953, in Iron Mountain, MI. He attended Central Catholic High School and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in San Antonio, TX. After high school, he attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and then the Art Institute of San Antonio, earning a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1976. He earned a master’s degree in fine arts from Boston University in 1986.

In 1995, he received certification as a liturgical consultant from the Catholic Theological Union. Prior to joining the Saint Meinrad community, he worked as an artist and did missionary work as a Marianist brother. He is well known throughout the United States as a liturgical artist. He works in a variety of mediums, from drawing and stained glass to pottery and woodworking.
