Virgil W. Merkel

Virgil W. Merkel, 75, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Born in Birdseye, IN, Virgil worked as an electronics engineer. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and the K of C Council 451. He was an avid woodworker dating back from his time at Saint Meinrad Seminary. Surviving are his wife, Carol Sue Merkel (Trabel) of Fort Wayne; son, Christopher (Ellen) Merkel of Centerville, Ohio; son, Steven (Christine) Merkel of Whiteland, IN; daughter, Lisa (James) Bonahoom of Fort Wayne; son, Jay (Shannon) Merkel of Spencerville, IN; daughter, Laura (Paul) Meitz of Lincoln, CA; grandchildren, Matthew, Alastair, Tiffany, Riley, Sam, Grant, Joseph, Grace, Teresa, and Anna Merkel, Caitlyn and Colin Jackson, Noah Bonahoom, and Koa Meitz; brother, Allen (Marlene) Merkel of Jasper, IN; sister, Florence (Dennis) Vogler of Cottonwood, AZ; brother, David (Brenda) Merkel of Celestine, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Rosella Merkel; sister, Laverne Merkel; and granddaughter, Isabella Merkel. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013 at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Rd. with a Rosary service at 4:30 pm. Burial in Catholic Cemetery.
