Archbishop Joseph Doré, SS, retired archbishop of Strasbourg, France, will give the Dolle Lecture on Church Art and Architecture at Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, St. Meinrad, IN.

His topic is “The Beautiful, the Cathedrals and the Christian Faith.” He will talk about the relationship between Christian art and faith.

During his time as rector, he supported the establishment of the Institute of Sacred Arts, which became the Institut Supérieur de Théologie des Arts (Higher Institute of Theological Arts). He was then director of the Department of Research of the Catholic Institute of Paris from 1994 to 1997.

He was named archbishop of Strasbourg on September 2, 1997. For reasons of health, he resigned as archbishop August 25, 2006, remaining apostolic administrator until April 21, 2007. In 2009 he received the Cardinal Grente Prize for his work. In 2011, he was named commander in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Peter and Viola Dolle Lecture on Church Art and Architecture, which was established by Saint Meinrad alumnus Adam Dolle to commemorate the lives of his parents. They spent 48 years together until Peter’s death in 1982. Both exhibited an artistic sensitivity and an abiding Christian faith. Peter was a master builder, while Viola embodied a spontaneous spirit that is the life of art.
