Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

September 2014

First Week of September

Father Guy was our Mass Heb on the 22nd Sunday (and week) in Ordinary Time.

The Academic Year began on Tuesday-classes met for the first time, and the seminary community celebrated a special Evening Prayer, at which the faculty received a special blessing.

Archabbot Justin announced two appointments during the week. In addition to assuming teaching and faculty responsibilities next semester, Father Thomas will now serve as Associate Monastery Vocation Director and, additionally, serve on the Monastery Liturgical Advisory Committee. Our newly professed junior, Brother André, was appointed as Master of Ceremonies II.

We helped Archabbot Bonaventure celebrate his 96th birthday on Saturday! He has a regular place at the abbot's table in our refectory, of course, but a special cake and colloquium added a special note to the day. Ad multos annos, Archabbot Bonaventure!

Week of September 7

Father Subprior Guerric took the weekly rotation as Mass Heb during this 23rd Week in Ordinary Time. And the monastery's deacons have begun to preach. Brother Luke preached on Monday, the feast of the Birthday of the Blessed Mother, and Brother Simon Baker, a "visiting Benedictine" from St. Benedict Abbey in Atchison, Kansas, spent part of his week preparing for his homily this coming Sunday.

Week of September 14

We celebrated the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sunday, an O.P.-ranked feast. Father Prior Kurt presided at the Conventual Mass and Br. Simon Baker assisted as deacon and preached.

About 60 of our lay degree students were on the Hill over the weekend, taking one of the following courses: "God and the Human Person," taught by Dr. Keith Lemna; "Christian Ethics," by Dr. Kevin Schemenauer; "Modern Church History," by Dr. Robert Alvis; and "Human Development and Christian Maturity," by Sr. Janice Bachman, OP.

Archbishop Daniel fell in his infirmary cell early in the week and fractured his hip. His left hip replacement surgery went without complications and he is resting comfortably.

Week of September 21

Father Meinrad was our Mass Heb for the 25th Sunday and Week in Ordinary Time.

Archbishop Daniel is recuperating steadily from his hip replacement surgery. He is now residing at Scenic Hills Care Center in Ferdinand, where he is undergoing the initial post-surgical therapy.

Father Abbot Justin gave his monthly conference to the monastic community Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty guests from St. Aloysius Parish in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, arrived on the Hill Wednesday, staying through Sunday for their women's retreat.

Two other groups arrived over the weekend to make a retreat: 17 students from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio; and 37 high school students from Bishop Chatard, Indianapolis, participated in the junior men's retreat.

Week of September 28

Father Eugene was our Mass Heb for the 26th Sunday and Week in Ordinary Time, and as this month ends -- Tuesday -- he's been quite busy. He presided and preached on Sunday, as usual, then again on Monday for the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, and then, at Father Abbot's invitation, on Tuesday for the 17th anniversary of the Dedication of the Archabbey Church.

See you in October!

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here Father Prior Kurt reports on some of last month's events at Saint Meinrad.
