Saint Meinrad alumni host Day of Service

March 17, 2014

SM_service01.jpgThe Saint Meinrad Alumni Association hosted the first annual Saint Meinrad Alumni Day of
Service on Saturday, March 15, in Evansville, IN.

Sixteen alumni, current students, co-workers and monks of Saint Meinrad gathered at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville.

Sergeant Darren Sroufe, chaplain of the Evansville Police Department, organized the day of service with the theme Ora et Labora, from the Rule of St. Benedict, which is Latin for "Prayer and Work." Sroufe is the current president of the Saint Meinrad Alumni Association.

SM_service02a.jpgThe day began with a morning prayer service, led by Fr. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, a monk of Saint Meinrad and rector of St. Benedict Cathedral. The group spent the morning completing service projects for the cathedral, before heading to Wesselman Park in the afternoon to pick up trash and debris.

"The energy and enthusiasm behind the Alumni Day of Service has been remarkable," says Tim Herrmann, director of Alumni Relations at Saint Meinrad. "We had a wonderful day in Evansville serving both the church and the community."

The day concluded with an afternoon Mass celebrated by alumnus and Diocese of Evansville Bishop Charles Thompson at St. Benedict Cathedral.
