Seven celebrate jubilees of profession
On July 26, the Benedictine community of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad, IN, celebrated the jubilees of monastic profession of seven monks. Celebrating his 70th jubilee was Br. Benedict Barthel, OSB. Br. Jerome Croteau, OSB, and Fr. Benedict Meyer, OSB, celebrated their 60th jubilees, while Archbishop Daniel Buechlein, OSB, Fr. Pius Klein, OSB, Fr. Micheas Langston, OSB, and Fr. Gregory Chamberlin, OSB, celebrated their 50th jubilees.
Br. Benedict was born in Evansville, IN, on November 3, 1919. He professed his vows as a Benedictine monk on February 10, 1939.
For 41 years, Br. Benedict worked at Abbey Press, where he performed a variety of duties, including work in the printing department and the sculpture shop. He later worked in the Scholar Shop and as assistant monastery guest master.
He currently works in the Liturgical Music Office as an assistant.
Br. Jerome was born in Belcourt, ND, on April 8, 1929. He professed his vows as a Benedictine monk on May 10, 1949.
Br. Jerome worked in the Saint Meinrad vineyard for 30 years, and has had assignments in the wine cellar, on the building crew and as a carpenter and landscaper. In the 1950s, he spent 18 months at Blue Cloud Abbey in Marvin, SD, a foundation of Saint Meinrad Archabbey.
He currently assists with housekeeping duties in the monastery.
Fr. Benedict was born in Cedar Grove, IN, on September 24, 1927. He professed his vows as a Benedictine monk on August 1, 1949, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1954.
He earned a BA from Saint Meinrad College in 1950 and received advanced degrees from the Catholic University of America in 1955 and 1956. He then taught at Saint Meinrad Seminary for five years. He served for a number of years in Saint Meinrad’s Brazil and Peru missions.
Fr. Benedict was a chaplain and pastor for 26 years in Arkansas, including 15 years at St. John Baptist Church in Brinkley. He is now retired and residing in the monastery.
Archbishop Daniel was born on April 20, 1938, in Jasper, IN. He professed his monastic vows on August 15, 1959, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1964.
Archbishop Daniel spent 12 years at Saint Meinrad attending the High School, College and School of Theology. He also attended Sant’ Anselmo, Rome, and received a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1966.
From 1966-71, he was a teacher and administrator at Saint Meinrad College and School of Theology. Archbishop Daniel taught Latin, philosophy, theology, canon law, and reconciliation and was also assistant dean of students and director of spiritual formation.
He served as president-rector of the School of Theology from 1971-84. In 1984, he was named president-rector of both schools and served in that capacity until he was named bishop of the Diocese of Memphis in 1987.
In 1992, he was named to lead the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and continues to serve in that capacity. Archbishop Daniel has written many articles and publications and serves on numerous national and international boards and committees.
Fr. Pius was born on May 12, 1939, in Aurora, IN. He professed vows on April 19, 1959, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 31, 1974.
Fr. Pius served at Saint Meinrad’s priory in Huaraz, Peru, from 1964-84, except for the years he returned to the Archabbey to complete his priesthood studies. In Peru, his assignments included school principal, English and religion teacher, and seminary disciplinarian. After his ordination, he returned to Peru, where he served as pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Lima. From 1978-84, he was the superior of the priory.
He returned to Saint Meinrad in 1985 and served as chaplain to the sisters at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, IN, and was director of food service in Saint Meinrad’s monastery. Fr. Pius was pastor of St. Mary Parish, Huntingburg, IN, from 1987-2008.
He currently is director of pastoral assistance for the monastery, works in the monastery kitchen and is a commuting chaplain for the Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand.
Fr. Micheas was born on December 26, 1938, in Paducah, KY. He professed his monastic vows on August 15, 1959, and was ordained to the priesthood on September 5, 1965.
Fr. Micheas received a BA from Saint Meinrad College and an MA in German from Middlebury College in Vermont. He taught in the high school and college at Saint Meinrad from 1965-70. Fr. Micheas entered the United States Army in 1970 as a chaplain and served in Vietnam.
From 1976-77, Fr. Micheas served as assistant pastor at St. Benedict’s Parish, Evansville, IN, and then as assistant coordinator of student life at Saint Meinrad College. In 1983, he returned to active duty in the Army with the rank of major, serving as chaplain at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX.
Fr. Micheas is currently chaplain at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC.
Fr. Gregory was born on October 12, 1938, in Indianapolis, IN. He professed his monastic vows on August 15, 1959, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 2, 1965.
Fr. Gregory has a BA from Saint Meinrad College, an MDiv from Saint Meinrad School of Theology and an MA from Middlebury College. He served as assistant dean of students and dean of students from 1966-78. He became vice rector of Saint Meinrad College in 1976.
In 1981, Fr. Gregory began work in Saint Meinrad’s Development Office, including as alumni director. He also taught in Saint Meinrad College during this time. From 1986-87, Fr. Gregory was administrator of St. Michael Parish, Cannelton, IN, and St. Pius Parish, Troy, IN. He then served a year as associate pastor at St. Louis Parish, Memphis, TN, and two years as administrator of St. Henry Parish, St. Henry, IN.
Fr. Gregory has been pastor of St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, IN, since 1991.
