Fr. William Medley named Bishop
On December 15, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr. William Francis Medley, 57, to serve as bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro in Kentucky. Bishop-elect Medley attended Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology from 1978 to 1982, earning his Master of Divinity.
His Mass of Episcopal Ordination is scheduled for February 10 at the Owensboro Sportscenter. He succeeds Bishop John J. McRaith, who resigned in January 2009 for health reasons.
Since 2008, Bishop-elect Medley, a priest of the Archdiocese of Louisville, has served as pastor of the new St. Bernadette Parish in Norton Commons, which was formed by the merger of two parishes he led.
Bishop-elect Medley attended St. Thomas Seminary High School in Jefferson County and graduated from Bellarmine University (then Bellarmine College) in Louisville with a bachelor of arts in philosophy and psychology.
He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Louisville on May 22, 1982. Following ordination, he was appointed associate pastor of St. Pius X Parish and chaplain of Assumption High School in Louisville.
Bishop-elect Medley has served in numerous parishes in the Archdiocese and has been instrumental in two key mergers within the diocese. In 1989 he was appointed director of the Office of Clergy Personnel.
He has served in a variety of positions in the Louisville Archdiocese including on the College of Consultors, the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Priests’ Council, the Planning Commission and the Priests’ Health Panel. He has also served as president of the Bardstown/Nelson County Ministerial Association and on the Nelson County Human Rights Commission.
