Continuing Formation for Deacons

Print Page

The continuing formation of deacons is a human necessity which must be seen in continuity with the divine call to serve the Church in the ministry and with the initial formation given to deacons, to the extent that these are considered two initial moments in a single, living, process of Christian and diaconal life…. On the part of both the Church which provides ongoing formation and of deacons who are its recipients, such formation should be regarded as a mutual obligation and duty arising from the nature of the vocational commitment which has been assumed.

Basic Norms for the Formation of Permanent Deacons: Directory for the Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons #63

In addition to providing quality initial formation for deacon candidates, Saint Meinrad offers various opportunities for ongoing formation for deacons. Besides offering graduate-level theology courses and degrees, we also offer several certificate programs.

Specialization Certificates: Deacons seeking further formation for particular ministries in the Church can benefit from focused study in different areas, including Church history, ethics and moral theology, liturgical and sacramental theology, pastoral studies, Scripture, spirituality, and systematic theology. Certificate in Spiritual Direction: This  prepares candidates to offer this important ministry of accompaniment and guidance. As bridge figures in the Church, some ordained deacons may be uniquely situated to become gifted directors.  Learn More

Those involved in ministry can benefit from ministry supervision. This certificate program provides an opportunity for supervision with emphasis on preaching or pastoral care. Learn More
