Cruise Alaska's Inside Passage on this Seven-Day Retreat for Priests

The Institute for Priests and Presbyterates has conducted Cruise Retreats for Priests since 2007. Now for 2014, a new destination - Alaska's Inside Passage!

Join fellow priests in a weeklong retreat at sea aboard the Norwegian Pearl, as Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSB, offers "Biblical Spirituality and the Contemporary Priesthood."

The cruise sails June 22-29, 2014, round trip from Seattle, WA. In Alaska, visit Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Glacier Bay National Park. Finally, visit Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Seattle.

fr_eugene_color.jpgFr. Eugene Hensell, OSB, will lead the retreat, "Biblical Spirituality and the Contemporary Priestood." 

Fr. Eugene is a Benedictine monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. In addition to parish work, campus ministry and college teaching, Fr. Eugene served from 1982 until 1996 as vice rector of Saint Meinrad College and then president-rector of both the College and the School of Theology.

Since 1997, Fr. Eugene has been engaged in full-time retreat work, conducting biblical retreats and workshops for priests, religious, and laity throughout the country and in several foreign countries. He brings to this work over 30 years of teaching experience, as well as a strong sense of the Church's pastoral needs.

With his wide contacts among clergy, religious and laity, Fr. Eugene brings to his students a deep and sympathetic understanding of the challenges facing many facets of life in the contemporary Church.

Fr. Eugene is an active member of the Catholic Biblical Association, The Society of Biblical Literature, and The American Academy of Religion. He is the past president of The American Benedictine Academy. He has also recently been appointed to the advisory board of the journal, Review for Religious.

For the past 20 years, Fr. Eugene has been a contributing writer for Weekday and Sunday Homily Hints, a service published by St. Anthony Messenger Press. He regularly contributes book reviews to The Catholic Biblical QuarterlyThe Review of Biblical LiteratureCistercian Studies and other scholarly journals. He also is an associate editor for The American Benedictine Review.

In a single year from 1896 to 1897, this remote town along the Inside Passage grew from a few tents to a city of 20,000 gold seekers. Today, Skagway's charming boardwalk is lined with buildings that replicate those Gold Rush days. Excursions on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad offer visitors breathtaking views.

In Tlingit Indian, "Kach Kanna" means "spread wings of the eagle." These manificent birds are a common sight in some of the world's most lush wilderness. The Totem Heritage Center, historic Creek Street and Lumberjack shows provide many opportunities this day.

Reservation and Payment Deadlines

  • Cruise registrations, pending stateroom availability, must be received by February 8, 2014.
  • Space is limited to 10 cabins (20 retreatants maximum). Early registration recommended. 
  • Deposit due with registration.
  • Final payments must be received by March 14, 2014.

Cancellation and Travel Insurance

Prior to final payment, individuals would incur only the $100 non-refundable deposit.

After final payment, Norwegian Cruise Line's cancellation fees apply. All penalties listed below include the $100 non-refundable deposit:

  • Cancellation 75-56 days prior to sailing: $350 penalty per guest
  • Cancellation 55-30 days prior to sailing: 50% of cruise rate per guest
  • Cancellation 29-15 days prior to sailing: 75% of cruise rate per guest
  • Cancellation 14-0 days prior to sailing: 100% of cruise rate per guest
