Master of Arts
in Catholic Thought and Life

The goal of the Master of Arts in Catholic Thought and Life degree is to provide a basic knowledge of Catholic tradition. This general academic degree serves as preparation for further graduate theological or philosophical studies or for general educational purposes.

The curriculum consists of 48 credit hours (as few as 36 hours for students with previous theological or philosophical training). Core courses include the study of philosophy, Scripture, Church history and systematic theology. As a concluding exercise, the student must receive a passing grade on a comprehensive essay exam indicating achievement of the program’s intended outcomes.

Successful completion of the MA in Catholic Thought and Life degree requirements results in a graduate who is able to: Students will be able to:

  • understand the role of the Western philosophical foundations of Christianity;
  • understand the biblical, historical and doctrinal foundations of Catholic belief and practice;
  • read and interpret philosophical and theological texts critically;
  • analyze issues of contemporary life in light of Catholic philosophical and theological traditions;
  • identify the personal, social and cultural influences on his or her philosophical and theological interpretations and expressions.

Prerequisites

  1. The MA presumes no prior theological education. Unless an exception is made (see Admissions), MA students must possess a four-year undergraduate degree, in any field, from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  2. All MA students must complete the application process to be accepted into the degree program. (see Admissions)
