Human Formation
The bedrock of any effective ministry and service is “a healthy, well-balanced personality” (Co-Workers in the Vineyard, p. 36). Saint Meinrad can help students to cultivate:
- an understanding and respect of oneself and others;
- psychological and physical health;
- an ability to acknowledge one's gifts and limitations;
- an appreciation of diversity;
- the classical virtues of Chirstian discipleship.
Certainly, pastoral studies courses deal specifically with many of these qualities. But any serious engagement of the Catholic tradition —whether philosophical, dogmatic, sacramental, moral, biblical, historical or pastoral—will raise questions related to what it means to be truly and fully human.
Therefore, across the theological disciplines, Saint Meinrad faculty members make it a priority to integrate elements of human formation into their courses whenever possible and appropriate. The classroom becomes a community of learning where students can give and receive affirmation and critique, and thereby grow in self-knowledge and virtue.
Beyond the classroom, Saint Meinrad provides many opportunities to foster human formation. For physical health, the School’s extensive wellness program and facilities offer intramural sports programs, courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis, as well as equipment for weightlifting and aerobic training.
Outdoor facilities include tennis and handball courts, a soccer field, lakes for fishing, and paths and rural roads for walking, running and biking; national and state parks are also nearby. Programs are available for weight loss, yoga, aerobics, strength training and nutrition, as well as group hikes, canoe trips and other excursions.
The School also has an on-site health clinic for minor medical services, and offers weekday students the opportunity to purchase basic and supplemental health insurance and dental plans.
For psychological health, the School’s trained professional staff can provide student testing and psychological counseling services to students who have need.
