Cultural Offerings
Mexican-American Cultural Center: Formation for Hispanic Ministry
The Mexican-American Cultural Center, located in San Antonio, TX, offers an intensive Spanish-language program during the fall or spring semesters, as well as during the summer. It is taught at three levels—beginner, intermediate and advanced—emphasizing speaking and hearing Spanish for pastoral ministry.
Opportunities for intensive Spanish programs during the same time periods can be arranged at language schools in Mexico. These programs award course credit and involve additional costs. Scholarships are available. E-mail the director of Hispanic ministry for more information.
Mexican-American Cultural Center: Mini Pastoral
The Mexican-American Cultural Center offers a three-week intensive introductory program to Hispanic ministry. The program combines lectures, seminars and reflections with films, field trips and cultural events.
There is an additional charge for this program. Students receive two credit hours for their participation. E-mail the director of Hispanic ministry for more information.
Summer Spanish Immersion
Through overseas partner institutions, this 10-week intensive program provides the equivalent of two semesters of Spanish studies. Students must participate in an orientation (date listed in the School calendar), an on-site visitation from the professor of record, and register with both Saint Meinrad and the partner institution.
This program entails additional costs. E-mail the director of Hispanic ministry for more information.
Rome: An Experience in Christian Art and Architecture
Every two years, the School of Theology sponsors a three-week trip to Europe during the January Interterm. A two-week stay in Rome includes several tours and an exposure to ancient Roman and early Christian culture.
The trip offers the opportunity for additional travel in Europe. The next scheduled trip is January 2011; this trip involves additional costs. Students may earn two credit hours for participating.
TEAM-A: Ecumenical Experience
To promote a better understanding among Christians, students may take courses at any of the four Protestant seminaries that join with Saint Meinrad School of Theology to form the Theological Education Association of Mid-America (TEAM-A).
Other schools in the consortium are: Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, KY; Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, KY; Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, both Louisville, KY.
Registration forms and courses can be found on the TEAM-A Web site. The policy on cross-registration for courses at TEAM-A schools during the regular academic year is available through the Office of Theology Administration.
Financial Assistance
Saint Meinrad has several endowment funds, established by generous benefactors, which are available to help fund special learning opportunities for students who need financial assistance. Details are available in the Financial Aid section.
Annual Lectures
Thomas Lecture: The Thomas Lecture is an annual address given in memory of George and Mary Thomas and Fr. Kieran Conley, OSB, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. The lecture explores issues in philosophy and theology.
Dolle Lecture on Church Art and Architecture: Given in memory of Peter Dolle, an architect dedicated to the Church, and his wife, Viola, this lecture helps students grasp the expression of Christianity in Church art and architecture.
The John S. and Virginia Marten Lecture in Homiletics: Instituted as part of the John S. and Virginia Marten Endowment, this annual presentation brings notable homileticians to campus. A six-hour homiletics workshop is held the day following the presentation.
Black History Lecture: In February of each year, Saint Meinrad celebrates Black History Month by inviting a speaker to campus to talk on some aspect of the Black experience.
