Los Musicos de Alfonso free concert

Sunday, April 21
Time: 3 p.m. CDT
Location: Archabbey Church

Los Musicos de Alfonso, an ensemble that performs medieval music from Spain and beyond, will give a free concert on Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. CDT in the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Church, St. Meinrad, IN.

Los Musicos de Alfonso is comprised of former and current students of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, hailing primarily from the Early Music Institute.

The group's name derives from the source of a large portion of the repertoire they are inspired by and want to explore. Alfonso X, a 13th-century king of Castile and Léon whose reign began in 1252, was a great admirer and patron of music and performers. Some of the most important pieces of medieval repertoire, the Cantigas de Santa Maria, were composed and performed at his court.

Composers' works to be presented include ones by Hildegard von Bingen and Niccolò Da Perugia. Works to be performed are from the Cantigas de Loor de Santa Maria (1284), Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (1399), Las Huelgas Codex (circa 1300), as well as other medieval-era sources. Musicians include vocals, percussion, vielle (medieval fiddle) and hurdy-gurdy.

The program is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Guest House and student parking lots. For more information, contact Mary Jeanne Schumacher during business hours at (812) 357-6501.
