Bell Repairs

Print Page

The bells are silent at Saint Meinrad Archabbey. Their distinctive chords no longer proclaim to monks, students and visitors the passing of each quarter hour or call them to prayer and Mass.

Repairs and maintenance are under way to restore the sound of the bells. One bell - Bell 6 - was discovered in December to have a crack in it. Further inspection revealed issues with Bells 2-5.

On February 8, Bell 6 was removed from the Archabbey Church tower so it could be sent to the Netherlands for repair. Other work is already under way to get Bells 2-5 ringing in time to announce the joy of the resurrection this Easter.

The estimated cost to repair the bells is $100,000. In addition, the mechanisms for the tower clocks are antiquated and need to be upgraded - an estimate of $25,000.  Saint Meinrad also will set up a $50,000 endowment to cover annual maintenance and periodic repairs.
