Greetings from Saint Meinrad! I have been thinking a lot lately about the role of the monastery in the world, and I am increasing convinced that the distinct life of the monk offers a witness and a message that is as relevant and important as ever. As monks, we plant ourselves in this place, we limit our scope, and we go about the hard work of proving to ourselves and the world that the Kingdom of God is truly within our grasp. This kingdom comes to life in our prayer, in our love for one another, and in our service to the students, guests and pilgrims whom God places in our lives. There are days when we realize it more fully than others, but the monastery is and will always be called to be a vision of the Kingdom. And that is what we are working on here.

Seeking his workman in a multitude of people, the Lord calls us to him and lifts his voice again: “Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days?”

-- Prologue, Rule of St. Benedict

In his Rule, St. Benedict calls not the holy, but those who have the desire to be holy. If you have that desire, then read on, continue praying, and let us know if we can answer any more questions you might have about the monastic life at Saint Meinrad Archabbey. We are eager to share this life and to welcome others to join us in this school of the Lord’s service.

Peace!

Br. John Mark, OSB
Vocation Director

Welcome to Saint Meinrad Archabbey! I am glad you have taken the time visit our Web site. I hope it offers you a unique opportunity to seek and find information about the rich tradition of monastic life. Discernment is an important part of understanding our own call to holiness. I believe that discernment might be some of the hardest work you will ever find yourself doing!

You do not have to do this alone. Finding a local discernment group or a spiritual director and community can help you in discernment. I encourage you to take the time to pray about where God might be calling you. It is quite possible that He is calling you to seek God and serve the Church as a monk of Saint Meinrad. If you have further questions or would like to talk about the possibility of arranging a visit, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

In Christ,

Fr. Anthony, OSB
Associate Vocation Director

Welcome! The Rule instructs that all guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ. The opportunity to offer hospitality is one of the ways that leads the monk to God. As vocation guest master, I look forward to hosting men who are discerning monastic life.
