Spring 2016

Fr. Guerric DeBona delivered the Marten Fellow Homiletic Lecture at the University of Notre Dame in October. The lecture was titled "Recovering Our Voice: Catholic Preaching and Evangelization in America in the Early 20th Century."

Fr. Thomas Gricoski gave a retreat to Saint Meinrad deacons titled "Mystagogy on the Rite of Ordination of a Priest" at Einsiedeln, Switzerland, on January 16-21. He also presented a paper, "Towards a Steinian Neo-Essentialism," at an academic conference in Vienna in October.

Fr. Christian Raab published a review of Thomas Merton's In the Valley of Wormwood: Cistercian Saints and Blesseds for The Merton Annual: 2015 Centenary Edition.

Fr. Micheas Langston returned to the monastery in November after serving for the past 12 years as a civilian chaplain at Womack Army Medical Center and the Catholic community at Fort Bragg, NC. He is currently working on German translations in preparation for the quadrennial meeting of the world's abbots at Sant' Anselmo in Rome.

Fr. Kurt Stasiak presented "Becoming Better Confessors" for the Day of Sanctification, March 1, at Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis, IN. On March 3-4, he presented workshops to the priests of the Diocese of Buffalo, NY, and to the seminarians at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY.

Fr. Tobias Colgan published the Allendale Mass, dedicated to the Carmelite nuns of Terre Haute, IN.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain will be on sabbatical from mid-May to mid-December, staying at Catholic University of America. While there, he will be writing a book on celibacy formation and continuing his affiliation with Saint Luke Institute.

Archabbot Justin DuVall appointed Fr. Eugene Hensell, Fr. Meinrad Brune, Fr. Julian Peters, Br. John Mark Falkenhain and Fr. Thomas Gricoski to the Abbatial Election and Blessing Task Force. This group will handle preparations and plans for the logistics of both the election and blessing of the new abbot. 

Winter 2016

Archabbot Justin DuVall and Br. John Mark Falkenhain celebrated Mass with the Servants of the Paraclete Community at the Vianney Renewal Center in Dittmer, MS, on October 11.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain, Br. William Sprauer, Br. James Jensen, Fr. Christian Raab and several other monks traveled to Indianapolis, IN, for the National Catholic Youth Conference on November 20-22. The vocations office and the "One Bread, One Cup" program combined efforts to create an attractive and popular booth.

Fr. Denis Robinson, Br. Zachary Wilberding and Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented at the first Conference on Human Formation, co-hosted by Saint Meinrad and the Saint Luke Institute on December 6-9. The conference focused on "Practical Models of Celibacy Formation" and brought together 150 formation personnel from around the country.

Fall 2015

Archabbot Justin DuVall, Fr. Denis Robinson, Fr. Jonathan Fassero, Fr. Anthony Vinson and Fr. Christian Raab attended the inauguration for Fr. Brendan Moss as the president-rector of Conception Seminary College on August 23.

Br. Peduru Fonseka was appointed assistant refectorian on August 24. He will work alongside Fr. Pius Klein and Br. Martin Erspamer.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended the opening school Mass at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, KY, on August 27.

Archabbot Justin DuVall visited St. Rupert Parish in Newburgh, IN, on August 30 to attend their 150th celebration for the parish.

Fr. Damian Schmelz completed 15 years of service to the St. Henry Parish, St. Henry, IN, as pastor on August 30. The parishioners held an open house and reception in his honor.

Br. Zachary Wilberding was recently named Volunteer of the Quarter at Branchville Corretional Facility, where he does prison ministry.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain attended the Day of Prayer on September 13 at the Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN, along with the novices.

Fr. Sebastian Leonard retired from Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, after 20 years of service. He was their longest-serving chaplain.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended a Council for Priests meeting in Indianapolis, IN, on September 22.

Summer 2015

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended a meeting of the investment committee of the National Fund for Catholic Religious Vocations (NFCRV) in January.

Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the Archdiocesan Chrism Mass at the Cathedral on March 31. Also in attendance were Brother Kim Malloy and Novices John Avery and Timothy Herrmann.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented a workshop for the American Benedictine Formation Conference on screening for formation, in late April. The meeting was held at Christ the King Priory in Schuyler, Nebraska.

Fr. Christian Raab defended his dissertation and has earned a doctorate from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His dissertation was titled "Compromise or Charism: The Identity and Mission of Religious Priesthood in Light of Hans Urs von Balthasar's Theology." He graduated summa cum laude.

Archabbot Justin DuVall led the team of monks who conducted the regular assessment (visitation) of Ascension Priory in Jerome, Idaho, April 26-30.

Fr. Thomas Gricoski defended his dissertation and has earned a doctorate from the University of Leuven. He graduated summa cum laude.  

Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented a workshop for the Northwest regions of the National Religious Vocation Conference and the Religious Formation Conference in Portland, Oregon, in May. Both presentations emphasized the importance of an effective screening process in setting goals for initial formation in religious communities.

Fr. Eugene Hensell and Fr. Thomas Gricoski were elected to a two-year term on the Abbot's Council. Fr. Raymond Studzinski was also elected to a two-year term on the Board of Trustees for the Seminary and School of Theology.

Fr. Anthony Vinson participated in a home build mission trip to Belize, Central America, June 7-22.

Br. Peduru Fonseka, Br. William Sprauer and Br. André DeDecker attended Benedictine Junior Summer School at St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, KS, June 13-28. Br. John Mark Falkenhain taught a weeklong workshop on celibacy formation for the monks in temporary vows.

Fr. Subprior Guerric DeBona is on a sabbatical, which will extend through mid-January. He will be the visiting professor of homiletics at the University of Notre Dame.

Spring 2015

Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented a day-long workshop on interviewing candidates at the National Religious Vocations Conference Convocation in November. He also presented a workshop on celibacy formation for the Institute for Religious Formation at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, IL, in November.

Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the meeting of the Abbot President's Council at St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, LA, January 8-12.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended a meeting of the investment committee of the National Fund for Catholic Religious Vocations on January 29.

Archabbot Justin DuVall and Br. Martin Erspamer visited Conception Abbey in Conception, MO, to discuss their renovation plans and adaptations they implemented during their monastery renovation.

Fr. John McMullen, a monk from Blue Cloud Abbey, has formally completed the process of transferring his stability to Saint Meinrad Archabbey.

Br. André DeDecker started culinary school at Sullivan University in Louisville, KY.

Br. William Sprauer presented the 2015 Women's Retreat at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Dayton, OH, on February 20-22.  

Fr. Prior Kurt Stasiak gave a conference to the priests of Sioux City, IA, on February 25-27.

Winter 2015

Fr. Tobias Colgan and Fr. Denis Robinson attended the 10th anniversary celebration at Bishop Simon Bruté Seminary in Indianapolis, IN, in mid-September.

Archabbot Justin DuVall traveled to St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, LA, to take part in the celebration of its 125th anniversary.

Fr. Denis Robinson attended a VOCARE meeting, a celebration of vocations, in Owensboro, KY, on September 26.

Br. Zachary Wilberding and the retreat staff for the Branchville Correctional Facility presented a daylong retreat, on location, titled "Blessed are the Merciful" on September 27.

Archabbot Justin DuVall and Fr. Julian Peters attended the installation liturgies for the new bishop of Toledo, Bishop Daniel Thomas, on October 21-23.

Fr. Edward Linton accepted membership on the Board of the Friends of the Benedictines in the Holy Land in late October. He will also serve as the coordinator of guest services and of the monastic continuing formation programs offered at Sant Anselmo, Rome.

Fr. Noel Mueller will join the formation staff for the Seminary and School of Theology.

Br. Francis Wagner has been appointed secretary to the archabbot. He will continue his writing for the Publications Department at Abbey Press.

Fr. Timothy Sweeney was appointed administrator for St. Isidore Parish in Bristow and St. Martin Parish in Siberia. He will reside at St. Isidore. He will continue his work in the Archabbey Archives.

Archbishop Daniel Buechlein returned to the monastery from Scenic Hills in Ferdinand, IN, on December 22, following physical therapy for hip replacement surgery.

Fr. Joseph Cox gave a retreat to the monks of Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, CA, on December 7-12. 

Br. William Sprauer has been asked by Abbot President Vincent Bataille to be the webmaster for the Swiss-American Congregation's website,

Fall 2014

Fr. Augustine Davis hosted the Divine Will prayer meeting in the infirmary lounge on June 12. This group meets monthly in Washington, IN, to pray and study the writings of the Servant of God Luisa Piccarreta.

Br. James Jensen and Timothy Herrmann completed over 170 miles of the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) in July. They spent an average of 4-5 hours a day on their bikes and rode from Forest City, IA, to Independence, IA.

Fr. Prior Cassian Folsom visited Saint Meinrad Archabbey on August 1-4. He brought with him a junior monk from Norcia, a native of Indonesia, to be tutored in English.

Br. William Sprauer attended the solemn profession of Br. Stephen Lawson, OSB, a second-year theology student at Saint Meinrad, at St. Anselm's Abbey in Manchester, NH, on August 12.

Archabbot Justin DuVall celebrated the closing Mass for St. Anthony Parish's 150th anniversary celebration on August 17, in St. Anthony, IN.

Fr. Edward Linton directed a retreat for the staff of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Carmel, IN, in August. He spoke about leadership to 24 Dominican friars who were here for a recollection before beginning their theological studies at Aquinas Institute in St. Louis, MO.

Fr. Matthias Neuman, chaplain at Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, IN, gave a series of presentations at the Benedict Inn in September. The presentations covered the four major constitutions of the Second Vatican Council. 

Summer 2014

Father Vincent Tobin led an oblate retreat titled "Christ in the Cloister: Shaped by Word and Sacrament" on March 19-21.

Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the annual meeting of the Abbot President's Council at Marmion Abbey on March 27-29.

Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the Chrism Mass in Indianapolis with Br. Kim Malloy and Novice Dane DeDecker on April 15.

Abbot Denis Quinkert arrived at Saint Meinrad Archabbey on April 25. This concludes the arrival of all monks from Blue Cloud Abbey who are seeking transfer to Saint Meinrad.

Br. Luke Waugh will be working at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in New Albany, IN, this summer with Fr. Eric Johnson as his supervisor.

Br. Peduru Fonseka will spend the summer at Einsiedeln Abbey in Switzerland as a way of learning more about the Benedictine tradition.

Fr. Guerric DeBona was interviewed May 31 on Salt and Light Radio about the importance of good preaching and an upcoming homiletics conference in Toronto, Canada, where he will be speaking.

Fr. Anthony Vinson visited Appalachia, KY, on a youth mission trip to help families in need. The group consisted of youth and parents from both St. Meinrad Parish and St. Boniface Parish.

Fr. Brendan Moss presented at the annual Oblate Study Days June 9-12. The topic was titled "The Presence of God in the Life of an Oblate."

Fr. Anthony Vinson participated in building a new home in Belize, Central America, through Hand In Hand Ministries June 15-23.

Brs. William Sprauer and James Jensen attended a special summer program for junior monks at St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, PA, from June 14-28. The theme was "Building a dynamic and joyful community spirit."

Spring 2014

Father Bede Cisco was elected to a two-year term for the Board of Trustees for the Seminary and School of Theology on January 8.

Father Patrick Cooney was elected as an alternate to the General Chapter of the Swiss-American Congregation to be held in June at Prince of Peace Abbey. Father Prior Kurt Stasiak was also elected as a Delegate.

Father Edward Linton will complete his assignment at St. James Parish in Chicago on June 5 and will return to the monastery to take on work in the Seminary and School of Theology.

Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the Abbot's Workshop at St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, AL, on February 21-25.

Father Jeremy King led a Day of Prayer on February 13 for 49 priests from the Diocese of Evansville.

Father Prior Kurt Stasiak attended and was one of the keynote presenters at the annual convention of the National Organization for the Continuing Education of Roman Catholic Clergy (NOCERCC), held in Baltimore, February 23-27.

Father Mark O'Keefe has been assigned chaplain to the sisters of the Carmelite Monastery in Terre Haute, IN. The appointment is effective August 1, for a term of three years. He will continue his teaching responsibilities in the school.

Father Anthony Vinson gave a parish mission retreat at Holy Trinity Parish in Webster County, IA, on March 15-18. He spoke on "Realizing our Baptismal Call - What is It and How to Live It?"

Archabbot Lambert Reilly has relinquished the major retreat work he has been doing. He will take on occasional short-term pastoral assistance assignments and help with driving monks to appointments.

Father Gregory Chamberlin has returned to the monastery. He is residing in the infirmary regaining his strength and continuing some treatments.

Winter 2014

Archbishop Daniel Buechlein  attended a blessing of two new additions at the Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary in Indianapolis on October 21. One of them is a dining room and meeting space, which has been dedicated to Archbishop Daniel in gratitude for his founding and support of the seminary. Fr. Denis Robinson and Fr. Tobias Colgan also attended.

Archabbot Justin DuVall offered a pre-Advent Day of Recollection for priests of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis at the Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis on November 19.

Fr. Guerric DeBona and Dr. Richard Stern attended the National Academy of Homiletics in Louisville, KY, on December 5-7. The topic was on "difficult conversations" with texts.

Fr. Brendan Moss gave the annual Barth-Hamilton Retreat at Saint Meinrad December 6-8. The retreat focused on "Becoming Men of the New Evangelization."

Fr. Guerric DeBona's book, titled Between the Ambo and the Altar: Biblical Preaching and the Roman Missal (Year A), was released in December. It was published by the Liturgical Press. Books on Years B and C will follow.

Br. Francis Wagner signed copies of his new book, titled Grace in the Wilderness: Reflections on God's Sustaining Word Along Life's Journey, on November 30 at the Catholic Supply Stores in St. Louis, MO.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain and Archabbot Justin DuVall participated in a national meeting sponsored by the National Religious Vocations Conference (NRVC) on December 9-11. The meeting was hosted by Saint Meinrad Archabbey and brought together the vocation directors and major superiors of about 35 religious communities across the United States. The theme of the meeting was "Building an Internal Culture of Vocations."

Fr. Edward Linton is enjoying his travels while on sabbatical. He has visited numerous places, including: Nazareth, Capernaum, Istanbul, Chalcedon, Armenia and Tblisi. He is now staying at Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem, where he will remain until after Christmas.
