Advent is my absolute favorite season of the year. I love the readings at Mass, the music, the lighting of the wreath, the anticipatory waiting...all of it. I love it so much that sometimes I rush right into Advent after Thanksgiving without pausing to observe the last Sunday of the year – the Solemnity of Christ the King. This year, it has given me a moment to pause and reflect on this question: What kind of king do we have in Jesus?

We have a king who is eternal, unchangeable, all-powerful and yet entered the world as a baby.

We have a king who loves us so much that He became one of us in order to save us.

We have a king who suffered and died for our sins, though He was innocent Himself.

We have a king who chooses to be merciful as well as just.

We have a king who gives Himself to us in the Eucharist and lives in our hearts so as to never be away from us.

Perhaps it is fitting to reflect on the kingship of Jesus as we end another liturgical year and begin a new one. As we prepare our hearts to welcome the Christ child, let's not forget where His life is leading Him out of love for us. He is the beginning and the end, the king of our hearts and the king of the universe. We cry out with gladness and thanksgiving, for we are blessed to have such a king as this!
