45:300 Foundations in Christian Spirituality

Online class limits: 15
Aug. 25 -- Dec. 5, 2025

This course introduces students to foundational dimensions of Christian spirituality as expressions of the Church’s lived encounter with the Triune God. It explores ways the Christian tradition has understood, expressed, and nurtured this encounter, engaging Scripture, theology, and spiritual practices. At the heart of the course, we explore seven themes of the Christian spiritual life: Engagement with the Word, The Spiritual Journey, Prayer, Asceticism, Solitude and Community, Evangelization, and The Domestic Church. The course draws on classic and contemporary texts, and incorporates various methodologies, offering students both a critical framework and opportunities for personal appropriation of the Church’s spiritual tradition.
