45:404 Introduction to Icon Painting

This course will introduce students to the process and theology of painting icons. Students will gain greater understanding of the theology and technique of painting icons, while experiencing the hands-on process of writing an icon. Students will learn skills for board preparation, choosing a prototype, linework and drawing, transferring a drawing to a board, gilding, painting, and preserving an icon through oiling and varnishing finished work. (Enrollment limited to 15)
