Prophet of the Church Today: The Thought of John Henry Cardinal Newman: This course explores the life and writings of Saint John Henry Newman. In addition to studying his biography, the course will focus on his contributions to philosophy, theology, and spirituality. In particular, the course will analyze his idea of the development of doctrine, the reasons for his conversion, his work to form a Catholic university, his understanding of the relationship between faith and reason, and some of his key contributions to epistemology. While the course will be a close look at Newman in his own times and context, it will also be attentive to the ways in which Newman can still be instructive for how Christianity can respond to modernity.
