Winter 2018

Fr. Cassian Folsom, founder of the Monastery of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy, has transferred his monastic stability from Saint Meinrad Archabbey to the Norcia monastery. He served for 18 years as its founding prior.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak visited Fr. Warren Heitz and celebrated Mass for the Vianney Renewal Center Community in Dittmer, MO, on October 15.

Fr. Jeremy King  attended the fourth International Congress for Benedictine Oblates November 4-10 in Rome, along with Oblate Director Janis Dopp. The conference organizer was Fr. Edward Linton, who is director of international Benedictine formation at the College of St. Anselm, Rome.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak attended the 5th Annual Fr. Michael J. McGivney Vocations Dinner in Evansville, IN, on October 24.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain has been appointed monastery choirmaster.

Br. Zachary Wilberding has been appointed director of monastery vocations.

Br. James Jensen began working for the Development Office in donor relations on November 1. He will continue his work as administrative assistant for "One Bread, One Cup" and assistant sacristan.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain led a group of Saint Meinrad monks and participants from the "One Bread, One Cup" program in chant and Compline for more than 20,000 youth at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, IN, on November 17.

Fr. Harry Hagan and Fr. Sean Hoppe attended the priestly ordination of Brother David N'Djam, OSB, in Togo, West Africa, on November 18.

Fr. Justin DuVall presented the Advent Oblate Retreat, "To Flee or Not to Flee: Oblates and the Times in Which They Live," at the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Guest House on December  8-10.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak presided at the oblation and investiture ceremony in the Archabbey Church on December 9. Nine candidates were invested as oblate novices and thirteen made their final oblation. Fr. Denis Robinson gave a presentation titled "Oblation and the Domestic Church" following the ceremony.

Fall 2017

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak, Fr. Prior John McMullen, Fr. Justin DuVall, Fr. Adrian Burke, Fr. Subprior Guerric DeBona and Br. John Mark Falkenhain traveled to Conception Abbey, Conception, MO, to attend the 46th General Chapter of the Swiss American Benedictine Congregation on June 22.Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented a workshop on vocations with Fr. Michael Casey, OCSO.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak, Fr. Subprior Guerric DeBona, Fr. Harry Hagan, Fr. Justin DuVall  and Fr. Denis Robinson attended the installation for Archbishop Charles Thompson at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN, on July 28.

Fr. Denis Robinson, Fr. Tobias Colgan, Fr. Brendan Moss and Fr. Thomas Gricoski along with Fr. John Kang of the seminary staff, attended a two-week meeting in Rome hosted by the Congregation for Clergy on the newRatio Fundamentalis, the international document that governs seminary formation for the universal Church.

Fr. Anthony Vinson has been appointed monastic liason/intercommunity relations. He will oversee operational aspects, including infrastructure, institutional systems, and operating policies and procedures.

Fr. Luke Waugh has been appointed administrator at St. Isidore the Farmer Parish in Bristow, IN, and St. Martin of Tours Parish in Siberia, IN.

Fr. Paul Nord was appointed associate pastor at St. Meinrad Parish, St. Meinrad, IN, and St. Boniface Parish, Fulda, IN.

Fr. Patrick Cooney began working for the Diocese of Owensboro as judicial vicar on August 2.

Fr. Meinrad Brune has been appointed the new archivist. Novice Joseph Wagner will be his assistant once he completes the Archives and Records Management class at Indiana University.

Novice Noel Zamora has been appointed custodian of Mass intentions.

Summer 2017

Br. Giles Mahieu received the Indiana Senate Certificate of Achievement for 50 years of service to the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Volunteer Fire Department in April.

Fr. Julian Peters directed the ordination retreat for permanent deacon candidates for the Diocese of Wilmington, DE, onJune 7-11.

Fr. Raymond Studzinski was appointed to a two-year term on the Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology Board of Trustees on April 19.

Fr. Denis Robinson was appointed to serve a third five-year term as President-Rector on April 27.

Fr. Paul Nord was assigned to assist Father Anthony Vinson and Father Prior John McMullen with the nearby parishes of St. Meinrad and St. Boniface.

Fr. Luke Waugh assumed the duties of administrator of the parishes of St. Isidore and St. Martin. Fr. Barnabas Gillespie will assist him.

Br. Simon Herrmann and Br. Nathaniel Szidik attended the Mexican American Catholic College in San Antonio, TX, to study Spanish during the month of June.

Fr. Julian Peters gave the Holy Week Day of Recollection retreat for priests from the Diocese of Shreveport, LA, on April 11.

Fr. Christian Raab published a book review of Thomas Merton's Charters, Customs, and Constitutions of the Cistercians in the 2016 Merton Annual. His article, "How the Light Gets In: Leonard Cohen's Biblical Vision," was published in the May 5, 2017, issue of Commonweal

Spring 2017

Br. John Mark Falkenhain was on sabbatical in Washington, D.C., where he completed a draft for a book on celibacy formation to be published by Liturgical Press in 2018.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak attended the annual Abbots and Priors Workshop at Prince of Peace Abbey, Oceanside, CA, February 16. 

Br. Lorenzo Penalosa was appointed in-house guestmaster. He will tend to the needs of guests staying in the monastery and joining the monks for meals and recreations.

Fr. Luke Waugh began serving as chaplain at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, IN, March 1.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain was the keynote speaker for a national symposium on religious brothers held at the University of Notre Dame on March 25. The symposium was offered in honor of the recent 2015 Vatican document, On the Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in the Church.

Fr. Guerric DeBona was elected as delegate for the General Chapter to be held June 22-26 at Conception Abbey, Conception, MO. Fr. Adrian Burke will serve as the alternate delegate.

Fr. Denis Quinkert and Br. Francis Wagner have been appointed to the Monastery Conference Committee. This committee submit ideas for conferences and other spiritual exercises during the seasons of Advent and Lent.

Winter 2017

Fr. Anthony Vinson spoke at the appreciation dinner for vocations to priesthood, permanent diaconate and those in the consecrated life on October 25 at the Huntingburg Event Center, Huntingburg, IN. His topic highlighted the seminary pastoral formation program and its outreach to the tri-state area.

Fr. Cassian Folsom resigned as prior of Monastero di San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy, on November 22. He is the founder of the community and served 18 years as prior.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak attended the Congress of Abbots in Rome on September 2-23. The abbots elected Abbot Gregory Polan of Conception Abbey, Conception, MO, to an eight-year term as abbot primate and also met with Pope Francis.

Fr. Denis Robinson and Fr. Peter Marshall flew to Rome November 9 to attend the Consistory for newly named Cardinal Joseph Tobin.

Fall 2016

Fr. Brendan Moss completed a Master of Arts in religious education from Felician University in New Jersey on May 14. He also completed his first year as president-rector at Conception Seminary College in Conception, MO.

Br. James Jensen has been appointed as assistant sacristan and as a member of the Abbey Press Advisory Board.

Br. William Sprauer has been appointed coordinator of vocations media for the Office of Monastery Vocations.

Archabbot Kurt Stasiak traveled to Rome for the quadrennial Congress of Abbots on September 2-23. Pope Francis spoke to the Congress on September 8 and a new abbot primate, Abbot Gregory Polan of Conception Abbey, was elected.  

Fr. Tobias Colgan and Br. Zachary Wilberding have been elected to serve two-year terms on the Abbot's Council. Fr. Denis Robinson and Fr. Christian Raab were elected to serve one-year terms.

Fr. Tobias Colgan, Fr. Louis Hacker, Fr. Adrian Burke, Br. Zachary Wilberding and Br. William Sprauer have become members of the Task Force on the Customary Committee. Fr. Prior John McMullen joined the committee as an auditor.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended the 60th Biennial Convention of the Delta Chi Fraternity in Louisville, KY, on July 27-31, where he presented a session on "Fraternal Correction: Leading with the Basic Expectations as a Guide" and had the distinction of serving as the convention sergeant-at-arms.

Summer 2016

Then-Archabbot Justin DuVall attended the annual meeting of the Abbot President's Council at Glastonbury Abbey in Hingham, Massachusetts, on April 16-21. He attended the annual meeting of the Indiana Bishops and Major Superiors at Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis on May 1-2.

Fr. Edward Linton was elected to the Council of Seniors at Sant Anselmo Monastery in Rome.

Br. Zachary Wilberding traveled to the country of Suriname, South America, to give two talks on prayer to a conference of fiscal officers of the English-speaking Catholic dioceses of the Caribbean on May 21-25.  

Fr. John McMullen has been appointed prior of Saint Meinrad Archabbey.  

Fr. Thomas Gricoski has been appointed liturgical master of ceremonies and chair of the Liturgical Advisory Committee.

Br. André DeDecker has been appointed to the responsibility of assigning the weekly duties and assistant master of ceremonies.

Fr. Barnabas Gillespie  has been appointed a member of the Liturgical Advisory Committee.

Fr. Anthony Vinson, along with 30 pilgrims from Fulda and St. Meinrad, IN, traveled to Fulda, Germany, to celebrate the feast day of St. Boniface on June 5. The pilgrimage was the capstone to a year-long celebration honoring the 150th anniversary of the parish church in Fulda, Indiana. He also traveled to Belize City, Belize, Central America, on June 12-26 for an immersion trip. 

Spring 2016

Fr. Guerric DeBona delivered the Marten Fellow Homiletic Lecture at the University of Notre Dame in October. The lecture was titled "Recovering Our Voice: Catholic Preaching and Evangelization in America in the Early 20th Century."

Fr. Thomas Gricoski gave a retreat to Saint Meinrad deacons titled "Mystagogy on the Rite of Ordination of a Priest" at Einsiedeln, Switzerland, on January 16-21. He also presented a paper, "Towards a Steinian Neo-Essentialism," at an academic conference in Vienna in October.

Fr. Christian Raab published a review of Thomas Merton's In the Valley of Wormwood: Cistercian Saints and Blesseds for The Merton Annual: 2015 Centenary Edition.

Fr. Micheas Langston returned to the monastery in November after serving for the past 12 years as a civilian chaplain at Womack Army Medical Center and the Catholic community at Fort Bragg, NC. He is currently working on German translations in preparation for the quadrennial meeting of the world's abbots at Sant' Anselmo in Rome.

Fr. Kurt Stasiak presented "Becoming Better Confessors" for the Day of Sanctification, March 1, at Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis, IN. On March 3-4, he presented workshops to the priests of the Diocese of Buffalo, NY, and to the seminarians at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY.

Fr. Tobias Colgan published the Allendale Mass, dedicated to the Carmelite nuns of Terre Haute, IN.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain will be on sabbatical from mid-May to mid-December, staying at Catholic University of America. While there, he will be writing a book on celibacy formation and continuing his affiliation with Saint Luke Institute.

Archabbot Justin DuVall appointed Fr. Eugene Hensell, Fr. Meinrad Brune, Fr. Julian Peters, Br. John Mark Falkenhain and Fr. Thomas Gricoski to the Abbatial Election and Blessing Task Force. This group will handle preparations and plans for the logistics of both the election and blessing of the new abbot. 

Winter 2016

Archabbot Justin DuVall and Br. John Mark Falkenhain celebrated Mass with the Servants of the Paraclete Community at the Vianney Renewal Center in Dittmer, MS, on October 11.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain, Br. William Sprauer, Br. James Jensen, Fr. Christian Raab and several other monks traveled to Indianapolis, IN, for the National Catholic Youth Conference on November 20-22. The vocations office and the "One Bread, One Cup" program combined efforts to create an attractive and popular booth.

Fr. Denis Robinson, Br. Zachary Wilberding and Br. John Mark Falkenhain presented at the first Conference on Human Formation, co-hosted by Saint Meinrad and the Saint Luke Institute on December 6-9. The conference focused on "Practical Models of Celibacy Formation" and brought together 150 formation personnel from around the country.

Fall 2015

Archabbot Justin DuVall, Fr. Denis Robinson, Fr. Jonathan Fassero, Fr. Anthony Vinson and Fr. Christian Raab attended the inauguration for Fr. Brendan Moss as the president-rector of Conception Seminary College on August 23.

Br. Peduru Fonseka was appointed assistant refectorian on August 24. He will work alongside Fr. Pius Klein and Br. Martin Erspamer.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended the opening school Mass at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, KY, on August 27.

Archabbot Justin DuVall visited St. Rupert Parish in Newburgh, IN, on August 30 to attend their 150th celebration for the parish.

Fr. Damian Schmelz completed 15 years of service to the St. Henry Parish, St. Henry, IN, as pastor on August 30. The parishioners held an open house and reception in his honor.

Br. Zachary Wilberding was recently named Volunteer of the Quarter at Branchville Corretional Facility, where he does prison ministry.

Br. John Mark Falkenhain attended the Day of Prayer on September 13 at the Cathedral in Indianapolis, IN, along with the novices.

Fr. Sebastian Leonard retired from Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, after 20 years of service. He was their longest-serving chaplain.

Fr. Anthony Vinson attended a Council for Priests meeting in Indianapolis, IN, on September 22.
