Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

July 1-7, 2016

Last weekend, Fr. Noel hosted a "Basic Bach" retreat at the Guest House.

During the week, several priests from around the country joined us for a priesthood retreat hosted by Father Denis R. through the Guest House.

Last weekend, the juniors and their superiors (Father Subprior Guerric and Father Thomas) took a boat ride on the Belle of Louisville in Louisville, KY, and enjoyed a scenic tour of the Ohio River including the construction of a new bridge.

Several "One Bread, One Cup" interns helped with Mass last Sunday, including adding their beautiful voices to our liturgy for our preparation of the gifts and our Eucharist songs.

The third and final "One Bread, One Cup" conference of the summer began this Wednesday. Several monks are involved in catechesis and the sacraments.

On the 4th of July, we enjoyed a cook-out/eat-in for dinner after Vespers. YUM! Brother Martin cooks a mean steak and salmon on the grill.

At table we are readingThe Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr.

Father Harry is teaching Latin to Brother William.

Father Micheas is teaching German to Father Gavin.

Brother Stephen will assume responsibilities of Director of Transportation on August 6, taking over for Father Sean.

Father Sean will continue as our Guestmaster and as Director of the Vestry. In addition to these two responsibilities, he has served us as Director of Transportation since 2009.

Father Denis Q. has volunteered to serve as a "practical assistant" for Transportation. Working in conjunction with Brother Stephen and Becky Boehm (Health Service secretary), he will himself provide travel for confreres' healthcare appointments off the Hill, as well as arranging for other drivers to make these trips.

We met as a community on Wednesday to review the status of the monastery upgrade project. As of right now, we plan to move back at the beginning of August, and the monastic infirmary residents will move back toward the end of August. Thank you for your prayers as we transition to "home."

In closing, a prayer over-read on social media in light of recent events of hatred. May we be Christ's light and love for those around us.

Lord, when I am troubled help me listen.

Lord, when I do not understand, help me listen.

Lord, when I am angry, help me listen.

Lord, when the time comes for me to take action,

Let it be Your love that works in my words, that works in my hands, that works in my feet.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
